Fluid, a new Community Server Blog Theme

August 04, 2007

If you haven't heard, the deadline for the Community Server Theme Contest has passed . The good news is that now you can vote on your favorite themes and download them for your site(s). As part of the Theme Extravaganza, I submitted a single Blog Theme, Fluid, similar to the one currently used on daptivate.com (note that this is about to change, as I am currently working with a designer on a new theme). It is named Fluid for several reasons ... that is the name of the Arcsin template I used as...  ... Read the full post or  the 71 comments. Filed under:

Twitter Clients Galore

June 13, 2007

If you are looking for a stand-alone Twitter client for your Windows box, you've come to the right place. Sort of. I have a recommendation. Check out Tel e twitter . A group of us at Telligent teamed up with others in the community , led by Jason , and decided to crank out a Windows Twitter Client. We came up with something that is definitely worth a spin . If that doesn't suit your fancy, Google will keep you busy for a while . Finally, the point But really, the purpose of this post is to...  ... Read the full post or  the 6 comments. Filed under: , ,

Community Server Blog Twitter Client

April 13, 2007

Syndicating content on the web has never been easier. I would venture to guess that the Blog, in a general sense, has become the most popular way that users push content to the web. And most Blog software supports at least two methods of syndication: RSS and E-mail. Even if the Blog software doesn't there are sites like FeedBurner and FeedBlitz which enable these syndication options to be added or enhanced. So, that's pretty cool. A person can type some text, push a button and boom! It is...  ... Read the full post or  the 5 comments. Filed under: , ,

[AJAX Login] Compatibility with ASP.NET Authentication

February 26, 2007

[ Update: March 20, 2007 ] Before putting the finishing touches on this AJAX Login System / Control, I've decided to see just how secure it is by issuing a challenge . See if you can crack it... In Simplifying the Sign In Experience with AJAX , I brainstormed about how an AJAX Login control could improve a user's web application sign in experience. If you have been following the more detailed posts of each attribute, you will remember that my last post was on making sure the functionality...  ... Read the full post or  the 5 comments. Community Server Intellisense

February 16, 2007

A few months ago I was working on a project that required the creation of full schemas for the configuration files used by Community Server. The end goal of the project was to make it gut-splittingly easy to edit any of the settings in these configuration files. Paying special attention to the difficulty of this in hosted scenarios. Now, I guess you could say that the project is ongoing, but in reality I haven't touched it for at least two months. If I sensed that there was a big demand for such...  ... Read the full post or  the 5 comments. Filed under: , ,

Chameleon, XHTML, large fonts, and more

January 10, 2007

Fixed width blog theme be gone. Enter, stretchy three column Chameleon enabled layout with *valid XHTML and large readable text. This, after following Ken's lead and saving time by choosing an Arcsin theme . Thanks Ben . You're doing some awesome work ! The Before And After * valid XHTML - For you purists, the home page is valid XHTML. However, I haven't had time and probably won't take the time to go through all of my old posts and make them valid.  ... Read the full post or  the 5 comments. Filed under: ,

~sigh of relief~ ... how simple blogging now is (seriously)

November 07, 2006

Seriously, no more excuses Bloggers. You’ve been using e-mail for many years. Now you can use the same tool to Blog. Although I had a similar post in early December last year, blogging via e-mail has now changed. Enter Blogmailr . Previously, you may have been able to Blog via e-mail only if your blogging software supported it and you knew how to set it up. With Blogmailr , this becomes quite simple; very little setup and blogging software independent. Blogging via e-mail has truly arrived...  ... Read the full post or  the first comment. Syndication, Comments, and TrackBacks (2)

October 09, 2006

Comments seem to be one of the primary ways that a community forms. A bunch of people read a piece of content, a few comment, then a few more respond to the comments... and voila , an interesting discussion is born. Why then would one choose to not allow comments to their content? A few observations about the commenting options that a few bloggers have chosen: this, as a follow up to some notes about syndication options . No Comments The question: Allow user comments to my blog posts or not? The...  ... Read the full post or  the 3 comments. Filed under: , ,

CS SDK v2.1 - Domain Model

October 05, 2006

A little eye-candy for those who are diagram hungry (or not). If you can make sense of it, then more power to you. It is a high level domain model of the packages or top level namespaces contained in version 2.1 of the Community Server SDK . I have hidden the classes and namespaces contained in some of the packages in order to simplify the diagram. Although it is still quite complex, hopefully it will give you a high level overview of the relationships between namespaces. See my previous post (which...  ... Read the full post or  the 4 comments. Filed under: ,

Windows Live Writer and Friendly URLs

October 03, 2006

[ Update : This post was written before Community Server 2.1 SP2 was released. With SP2 and later versions of Community Server, the URLs are automatically formatted all lowercase with no punctuation characters.] One of my co-workers, Alex Lowe, recently pointed our team to a post on SEOmoz about best practices for URLs . If you haven't checked it out, I would highly recommend it. Since Alex recommended this post, I have been more aware of URL formats while I browse the web and work with various...  ... Read the full post or  the 5 comments. Filed under: ,

Windows Live Writer Tip - Avoiding "Server Error 0"

October 02, 2006

For those who have not yet experienced this error while using Window Live Writer, hopefully this will save you some time. Peter Laudati's post helped me resolve this one. He explains why it happens and that it is a known issue. The exact error reads like this: "Blog Server Error: Server Error 0 Occurred - Object reference not set to an instance of an object." It is caused by the following steps: Create a new post in Windows Live Writer. Publish the post to your Community Server blog. Delete the post...  ... Read the full post or  the first comment. CS SDK v2.1 - Namespace by Namespace

September 30, 2006

If you are a software developer and you haven't downloaded the Community Server Software Development Kit (SDK) , you are definitely missing out. This baby is chock full of goodies ... and I'm not talking about stuff that is just cool, rather stuff that is both cool and quite useful. Let's not get the two mixed up. For those not familiar with Community Server , don't let the name confuse you. When you hear or read the word Server don't think in terms of an operating system or web server (i.e. Windows...  ... Read the full post or  the 12 comments. Filed under: ,
